Elon Musk wants to go to Mars
Musk and his SpaceX program are the favorites to lead a manned expedition to Mars in the near future. Vegas oddsmakers have placed SpaceX as a 5-1 favorites to successfully lead a mission to Mars, over other private competitors Mars One (which would fund their project with a reality show at 15 to 1 odds) and The Mars Society (which wants to colonize Mars, at 9-1 odds). Other competitors include national spacey agencies: NASA (80-1 odds), Chinese space administration (100-1 odds), European Space Agency (300-1 odds),
SpaceX has moved on to experiments with recoverable rockets and GPS-guided landing platforms that could make the trip to our sister planet. According to Popular Mechanics, the company plans to release more specifics about its Mars Colonial Transporter before the end of this year.
Earlier this month, Musk talked about his desire to travel and have human beings live on Mars on the "Late Show with Stephen Colbert."
On the show he called Mars "a fixer-upper of a planet," which could be rapidly colonized by "drop[ing] thermonuclear weapons over the poles" to warm up the planet's atmosphere.
On SpaceX's flicker account there are photos and illustrations of the company's proposed Dragon space ship landing on the red planet.
